Care Built for Babies
Newborn Care
Today, thanks to advanced prenatal testing services, doctors are often aware of potential newborn problems ahead of birth, but babies can be surprising. With more than 30,000 babies delivered at hospitals in the Sutter Health network every year, we know to expect the unexpected.
Doctors within the Sutter Health network offer routine newborn care including genetic abnormalities testing, a hearing screening, a comprehensive newborn physical exam and several recommended preventive services that help keep your baby healthy.
In addition, mothers are supported with special services—chief among them, our lactation services. Because of this, the rate of mothers leaving Sutter hospitals breastfeeding is nearly 90 percent, as measured by the California Department of Public Health. Five of Sutter Health's birth centers have earned the Baby-Friendly Hospital designation from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund.
Advanced Newborn Care
If a problem is detected either at birth or within the first day of life, newborns may require more advanced care. The Sutter Health network of hospitals also includes advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Units where premature babies and babies with serious medical issues receive advanced life-saving care in a family-centered environment.
Baby Care
A lifelong adventure begins when you bring your baby home. Your baby’s doctor will see your baby regularly throughout the first year for well-baby exams, where growth and development are tracked and important preventive care, such as vaccinations, is provided. Your baby’s doctor may also take care of some procedures, such as circumcision in boys. Most importantly, your baby’s doctor will be there in case of accidents, illnesses or conditions, such as jaundice, during the first year.
