The death of a parent, sibling or significant other is often a very painful experience. For a child or teen, it can be particularly difficult because adults tend to protect them from such events.
The Children’s Bereavement Art Group, managed by Sutter Care at Home in partnership with Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, helps children and teens learn to cope with the death of a loved one.
About the Program
The Children’s Bereavement Art Group encourages children to express their grief through creative outlets. Children express what they are thinking and feeling through a variety of art activities, including drawing and painting. The artwork becomes a meaningful story about their loss experiences.
Grieving children also find support from their peers whose loved ones have died. Children and teens are placed in groups according to age, development and the type of loss. The groups meet every other week over a period of five months, and each group is facilitated by an art therapist with an extensive background in childhood grief.
