Dr. Herr is an advanced heart failure, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support cardiologist at the California Pacific Medical Center’s Center for Advanced Heart Failure Therapies.

Dr. Herr is dedicated to medical education and serves as the director of medical education at the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group and as a member of the CPMC Cardiology Fellowship Clinical Competence and recruitment committees. The CPMC Cardiology Fellowship named him Teacher of the Year in 2018.

In addition, he is a long-time Thoracic and Critical Care Community of Practice Representative for the American Society of Transplantation’s Comprehensive Trainee Curriculum Task Force. After graduating magna cum laude from Roanoke College, Dr. Herr attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, graduating with honors. He completed his internship and residency at the University of California, San Francisco and completed the Health Professions Educators Pathway.

Subsequently, Dr. Herr completed his fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at Cedars Sinai Medical Center/VA Greater Los Angeles Program, where he served as Chief Fellow in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at the Cedars Sinai Heart Institute, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Herr is currently involved in several research projects. He is the principle investigator of studies on the optimization of hemodynamic management using a pulmonary artery pressure sensor in patients with advanced heart failure and patients with mechanical circulatory support.

He is also actively involved in a study that investigates ICD generator change complications in patients with left ventricular assist devices and in another study that seeks to understand patient referral patterns to advanced heart failure centers. His research and clinical interests include temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support usage, hemodynamics, cardiorenal syndrome pathophysiology and management, transitions in care in teaching hospitals and medical education.
