Women have unique healthcare needs that change with age. At Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, we offer ultrasound assessment of fibroids, pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. If you are trying to start a family, specially trained radiologists can help you identify any physical limitations or fertility problems through diagnostic imaging tests. We offer specialty procedures including hysterosalpingography, which can show whether the fallopian tubes are obstructed or if there is scarring, a mass or uterine fibroids.
Once you are pregnant, we provide the latest in obstetric ultrasound, a safe, painless way to monitor the baby’s growth and development. We also use Doppler ultrasound when needed to assess blood flow in the umbilical cord or placenta.
When you reach 40, it’s time to discuss mammography screening for breast cancer with your doctor. We’re committed to offering the latest in breast imaging services in the Bay Area.
After menopause or if you have significant risk factors, your doctor may recommend a bone mineral density scan (DXA) to get a baseline reading of your bone mass. This X-ray-based technology can diagnose osteoporosis and monitor treatment.
At any age, you may experience abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain. Procedures we offer include:
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) — MRI uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce images of tissues and organs in great detail. Because radiation is not required, MRI may be used for pregnant women in place of CT and other imaging modalities.
- Transvaginal Ultrasound — Performed like a pelvic exam in which a very small transducer is inserted several inches into the vagina to better view the endometrium, uterus and ovaries. This enables the detection of abnormalities, scars, polyps, fibroids and cancer.
- Ovarian Vein Embolization — A minimally invasive treatment for a painful condition called pelvic congestion syndrome, where a damaged vein is closed off via a catheter and coils inserted by an interventional radiologist.
