When cancer spreads from one area of the body to another, it is said to have metastasized or formed a new site of cancer called a metastasis. Metastases of the spine can cause pain, press on the spinal cord, or even cause paralysis. At Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, we work with you to identify a care plan and treatment options to help manage your condition.

What treatments are available for spine tumors?

New cancer therapies, such as chemotherapies and immunotherapies, can help you fight your cancer and potentially live longer. But, many chemotherapies and immunotherapies are less effective for spine metastases than they are in other sites of the body.

You may benefit from radiosurgery or minimally invasive surgery to help stop growth of the tumor or to remove the tumor. Some patients may also benefit from procedures to help stabilize the spine, as spinal tumors can sometimes interfere with the normal motion of the spine. Medication to help strengthen the bone may be added to your chemotherapy to help prevent fractures of the bone. While some of these procedures can help with pain or physical function, many patients also benefit from physical therapy or medications to help manage these symptoms.

What is the Spine Oncology Program?

The Spine Oncology Program helps you and your family determine the best course of treatment for your spinal tumor or tumors. The program brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts who work with you to form a plan for optimal management of your condition.

Patients with spine tumors often have complex symptoms that may include pain or difficulty with day-to-day activities. Doctors aligned with the Spine Oncology Program work to provide symptom relief. Although treatments for spine tumors are often effective at stopping growth of a metastasis, patients are at risk for developing further spine tumors. The Spine Oncology Program works with radiologists to monitor the spine for signs of additional spots that might require treatment, even before symptoms arise.
