Dr. Prakasam is a pediatric endocrinologist at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento (SMCS) and a senior scientist at the Sutter Institute for Medical Research (SIMR). He is Director of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Children's Center at SMCS.
In addition to his clinical practice, for over 20 years Dr. Prakasam and his endocrine team have conducted research in type 1 and 2 diabetes (including pediatric diabetes), diabetes technologies, pediatric obesity, growth hormones, puberty disorders, pediatric endocrine bone disorders, thyroid disorders, the science of happiness, telemedicine and growth disorders.
Formerly President of the Northern California Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Prakasam is a current board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Sacramento.
Dr. Prakasam has presented at national and international conferences with published research in high-impact journals including Diabetes, Journal of the Endocrine Society, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Journal of Investigative Medicine. Dr. Prakasam trained in pediatrics in India (where he received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and DIP in children’s health), the U.K. (MRCP) and in the U.S., where he trained in pediatric endocrinology at NYU Langone Hospital, N.Y.
He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology, and he has a Masters in Health Administration (MHA) from the University of Southern California.
