If you or a family member has moderate or severe mental health issues, a partial hospitalization program might be the right solution. Through Sutter’s partial hospitalization programs, people typically spend five to six hours each week day in the hospital, but go home to sleep each evening. Our programs help many people get symptoms under control and return to fully functioning and productive lives.
While at the hospital, our patients receive the same evaluation and diagnostic services that are available to outpatients, including psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, medication management and assessment for substance use and eating disorders.
Once we make a diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan, you might participate in a variety of therapeutic services including:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy and educational sessions
- Family and relationship therapy and education
- Recreational therapy programs, including pet therapy, art therapy and drama therapy
In the partial hospitalization programs, we offer many services in a group setting, allowing you to develop peer relationships and draw strength and hope from the experiences of others. Some people also receive physical healthcare and case management services.
A partial hospitalization program can be an excellent alternative to full hospitalization for people who do not need 24-hour care. They also serve as a transitional program for those who have been hospitalized but are not ready to return to daily life.
