When your child is hurt or sick, you want to know that they will be treated as quickly as possible by pediatric experts. Sutter Health operates two of Northern California’s dedicated pediatric emergency departments and has a pediatric emergency transport team that can quickly move a child in need of the highest levels of trauma care to one of our hospitals with specialized pediatric trauma services.

Inside the Pediatric Emergency Department

Our Pediatric Emergency Departments in Sacramento and San Francisco are designed to serve the unique needs of children. Specialty doctors are board-certified in both pediatrics and emergency medicine and have the equipment and expertise to deal with all situations, from serious injuries or minor illness. The pediatric emergency department features child-sized equipment, toys in the waiting room and private exam rooms big enough to accommodate family members. Child Life staff can help your child with coping techniques and distractions like bubbles, songs, art and puppets. If your child will need a specific test or procedure, they can also help explain what your child will experience in an age-appropriate manner.

At a pediatric emergency department, your child is also surrounded by other children and families in the waiting room. This creates a more child-friendly atmosphere and can prevent a child from seeing a potentially frightening adult emergency situation.
