Since we opened the doors to Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, it has grown to become one of Northern California's largest and most advanced centers. We provide lifesaving services to infants born prematurely or with diverse diagnoses, including small for gestational age and multiple cardiac and congenital anomalies.
Infants are admitted to the NICU from our High-Risk Maternity Unit, Family Birth Center or through outside referral centers. We care for infants from 48 hospitals across 27 counties. Our family-centered program welcomes you, as parents, into the unit to participate in the treatment of your baby. Our NICU team consists of 10 board-certified neonatologists and more than 180 highly trained and experienced NICU nurses.
Support Network
In addition to our doctors and nurses, your baby and family will receive assistance from a large support network at the Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.
Rooming In
In the case of some medically complex infants, it may be necessary to “room-in” with your infant to prepare for a safe discharge home. The NICU has sleep rooms available for this purpose. Your nurse will provide information if this service becomes necessary.
Private Breast-Pumping Room
For your privacy, we offer a breast pumping room on the unit or, if more convenient, we have pumps available for use at bedside.
Family Waiting Area
We welcome visitors and supervised children to relax in this room during your baby’s stay in the NICU.
Our care for your infant doesn’t stop once they are discharged from the NICU. We offer a High-Risk Infant Follow-Up Program that supports your baby’s healthy growth and development and provides ongoing support and education programs.
