Everyone faces difficult challenges when recovering from severe traumas as well illness and other disorders. At Alta Bates Summit Regional Acute Rehabilitation Center in Oakland, you can meet those challenges in a caring, comprehensive and intensive environment designed to improve your ability to perform daily tasks and increase your independence.

Our acute inpatient rehabilitation center specializes in treating stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, complex orthopedic conditions and multiple traumas for people ages 18 and older for:

• stroke
• brain injury
• spinal cord injury
• neurological disorders
• complex orthopedic conditions
• cancer
• multiple traumas
• organ transplant, including lung, heart, liver, kidney

We offer an intensive, structured, and interdisciplinary team approach that incorporates physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreation therapy, neuropsychology and social work. Our program includes 24-hour acute rehabilitation nursing care under the direction of skilled rehabilitation physicians.

All patients in our 58-bed unit participate in therapy for a minimum of three hours each day, at least five days per week, depending on their individual goals.

The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits our comprehensive rehabilitation program and our programs for brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and cancer rehabilitation.

Canine-Assisted Therapy Program

Our Regional Acute Rehabilitation Center team includes trained therapy dogs who can be incorporated into a patient’s rehabilitation treatment. Our therapy dogs help lift spirits and can motivate patients to move, which is an important part of recovery. The dogs go for walks, play fetch and generally improve the health and well-being of our patients.

Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Program

A variety of conditions in the inner ear and brain can cause dizziness, imbalance, vertigo and other visual tracking problems. Our Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Program can help you overcome these symptoms.

• Goals — During your recovery journey, our experienced rehabilitation care team will help you set goals for recovery and will work with you to create an individualized treatment program to meet your goals. The team will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment as needed.
• Education and Training — You and your family are critical members of the rehabilitation team. We believe that patient and family education and training are key to rehabilitation success.

As you consider your rehabilitation care, it’s helpful to understand the differences in receiving care from an inpatient rehabilitation facility versus a skilled nursing facility. Our care team is committed to updating you and your family with evaluation results and progress in achieving short- and long-term goals.
