When the largest organ in your body develops cancer, you want a team of highly trained specialists at your side to diagnose and treat your liver problems. At CPMC's Cancer Center, this team includes hepatologists, surgeons, oncologists, interventional radiologists, nurses and other skilled health professionals.
Our Liver Cancer Program provides comprehensive, high-quality care tailored to your needs. Each year our team cares for more than 200 people who have hepatocellular carcinoma and metastatic liver lesions. Through our Hepatology and Gastroenterology Research Program, we’re able to offer new, investigational techniques for liver cancer. Doctors at CPMC are actively involved in clinical, basic science, and translational research, including clinical trials.
Getting a picture of your liver and bile ducts can help your doctor determine the best course of treatment for your particular cancer. We offer a wide range of the latest and most reliable diagnostic and imaging tests, including magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and cholangioscopy. Our multidisciplinary panel of experts review every cancer case together, in meetings called tumor boards, to combine their collective expertise and craft an approach that best fits each patient.
Treatment options for liver cancer are based on the size and location of your tumor, or tumors, and underlying liver function. For some cancers, we offer a variety of advanced surgical techniques, including embolization therapy, bile duct resection, biliary bypass surgery and liver resection. Our weekly Liver Cancer Clinic offers care for individuals with known or suspected liver cancer.
CPMC’s Cancer Center has earned accreditation from the American College of Surgeons for providing comprehensive cancer care, from surgery and radiation to education and support groups. And doctors at CPMC make it their goal to reduce your symptoms and discomfort by providing pain management and palliative care.
