Frequently Asked Questions
The main difference between an HMO and a PPO is the network of providers and the referral process.
With an HMO, you have access to a select network of providers and must choose a primary care physician (PCP) who provides most of your healthcare, coordinates your care and refers you to specialists. HMO plans often come at a lower cost compared to PPO plans.
With a PPO, you have access to a broader network of providers and can self-refer to specialists. While you’re encouraged to stay in-network for cost-saving benefits, you can receive care out-of-network. However, this flexibility often comes with higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs than an HMO
