Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started?
Fill out the volunteer application and submit online. Volunteering is rewarding and fun, but demands a significant service-based commitment on your part. Please carefully consider your schedule and your ability to commit your time.
What is my time commitment?
Most shifts are four hours long and nearly all shifts are during regular weekday business hours. There are a few weekend shifts in the Emergency Department and Patient Services. Your shifts will be scheduled on a monthly basis, based upon your availability. A one-year commitment of continuous service is required.
Where do the volunteers serve in the hospital?
Many of our service areas require a great deal of walking on your part. Note: We do not do “hands on” patient care or shadow professional staff.

No, we do not accept volunteers doing court-ordered service.
I only need 20 hours of community service for school. Can I fulfill this requirement at SAFH?
No, a one-year commitment is required.
Who should I list as references?
You may list friends, neighbors, members of church or social groups you belong to, or anyone who can provide a reference to your character and suitability as a volunteer in working in a diverse hospital setting. Do NOT list relatives.
What happens if I volunteer and want to go on vacation or get sick and cannot fulfill my commitment to work an assigned shift?
Let your service manager know of any planned vacation or medical leaves you need to take, so they can factor that into their monthly scheduling. If you have an unplanned event that does not permit you to work your assigned shift, it is expected that you will arrange for a substitute and let your service manager know of the change.
