Why Is Sexting an Issue?

In California, sexting to or from someone under age 18 is illegal. It’s also against the law to be in possession of sexting material that shows anyone under 18 years old. This kind of crime can be punishable by jail time or a huge fine.

Sexting is legal between consenting adults over age 18. However, in California it’s a crime to share nude or revealing photos with others without the subject’s clear permission, as in the case of “revenge porn.”

How Often Does It Happen?

Sexting appears to be on the rise among teens. In a recent study, researchers found that among people ages 12 to 17:

• Nearly 15 percent had sent sexts.
• About 28 percent had received sexts.

In 2009, the numbers were 4 percent and 15 percent, respectively, according to the Pew Research Center.

Opinions on Sexting

The opinions on sexting are incredibly varied. Here are a few examples from a survey of teens:

• “Sexting is juvenile and inane. It just shows the lack of self-respect the girl must have for herself.” (female)
• “I honestly see nothing so majorly negative about this. I’m one of those people that believe, ‘do whatever you want as long you are ready to suffer any consequence of any physical or mental effect towards you.’ What’s the worst possible scenario here? Others may see, maybe even your parents? If people want to show themselves off, let them, as long as it’s not any underage kind of situation.” (male)
• “OMFG. Sexting is amazing. I love technology.” (male)

Remember, sexting is illegal and, like any other crime, comes with punishments. Sexting is also emotionally costly. Some people feel violated when asked to send a sext or are on the receiving end of one. So, think before you sext. The picture or message could spread around to your classmates and even your family, so be cautious.
