Postpartum depression affects women of all ethnicities, including South Asians. In fact, South Asian women may be at a higher risk for the condition due to several factors.
Women raised within South Asian families are not typically taught or encouraged to discuss emotional distress for cultural reasons. South Asian women are also used to having the support of other female elders in the family. However, many women who moved to the United States have left part or all of their extended family behind. In addition, their husbands may have full time jobs that further contributing to their feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Physical symptoms, such as headaches, insomnia, nausea, appetite changes and fatigue, are often signs of psychological distress or depression.
