Through the Environment and Breast Cancer Group at CPMC’s Research Institute, Dr. William H. Goodson III and Dr. Shanaz Dairkee have demonstrated that common chemicals cause cells to exhibit important hallmarks of cancer: faster growth, enhanced response to estrogens, and an interruption of the normal process through which damaged cells die, leaving them at work in the body.
Drs. Goodson and Dairkee’s research on commonly found chemicals (BPA in can linings, PFOA in Teflon, terephthalic acid in #1 plastics, and methylparaben in cosmetics) has been featured in a 2017 article in Harvard Medicine.
The project continues to advocate for policy guidelines addressing the potential carcinogenic effects of low-dose exposure to multiple chemicals, and will expand research on xenoestrogens such as BPA and methylparaben.
Dr. Goodson says, “This achievement was made possible because of charitable gifts. Our studies linking toxic environmental chemicals to breast cancer depend on donations from individual donors like you. Together with your partnership, we can make our world safer.”
