Philosophy of Care
Cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm abnormalities), can be frightening and anxiety-provoking health problems. As a cardiac electrophysiologist, I have training as a cardiologist, with additional subspecialty training in the management of these chronic and complex heart rhythm diseases.
During each patient consultation and visit, I try to alleviate the fear associated with these arrhythmias by thoroughly educating patients about their disease (in plain English); outlining treatment options; and in collaboration with the patient, choosing the best treatment strategy. Often this involves a cardiac procedure, such as implanting a device (e.g. pacemaker, defibrillator) or a cardiac ablation. It is important for a patient to fully understand the indications, limitations, expected outcomes, and potential risks/complications that are involved with these invasive procedures. It is also important for the patient to have confidence in the skill and knowledge of the operator.
