This virtual course will cover the timeline prior to and following prostatectomy (up to 2 years post-operative). Prior to surgery, we expect participants to understand how to manage constipation, diet, practice breathing patterns, find the correct way to use their pelvic floor, quit smoking, review incontinence products and prepare for caregiver assistance.

We will show a video of the surgical procedure and discuss the immediate post-operative care and treatment. This will include catheter management and general expectations.

The instructor(s) will review what the male pelvic floor is and teach participants how to correctly access these muscles, as well as the core muscles.

We will discuss ways to maintain a healthy bladder, including review of potential bladder irritants and substitutes for common irritants.

Common symptoms like urinary leakage and urgency can be managed by distraction and suppression techniques which will be taught in the course.

There will be a sample exercise program of common pelvic floor exercises to perform after surgery and a sample of resources which can be helpful for managing short- and long-term symptoms.
