Going the Extra Mile for A Special Delivery

Brandi and Rob Dawson, proud parents

Brandi Dawson and her husband knew they were doubly blessed to be having twin boys.

But little Carson and Logan's much anticipated birthday came a month early, as the boys were born prematurely at Sutter Delta Medical Center.

Soon after delivery, Carson developed health complications and needed to be transferred for more specialized care to the newborn intensive care unit at Sutter-affiliated Alta Bates Summit Medical Center - 50 miles away.

"It broke my heart not to be able to hold my babies together, but I knew our boys were receiving great care at both Sutter hospitals," says Brandi.

Thankfully, within three days Carson regained his health and was ready to be transferred back to Sutter Delta. As both hospitals prepared for Carson's move, they discovered that insurance would not cover the return transfer service from Alta Bates Summit to Sutter Delta. But doctors, nurses, social workers and countless others from both hospitals were determined to reunite the family without burdening them with a bill they couldn't afford. Despite significant barriers, they relieved the family of the bill and reunited Carson with his mother and brother.

"As soon as I saw Carson, I started to cry," says Brandi. "It was such a special moment for all of us to be together."

Every day doctors, nurses and many others across our system work together to deliver the best care possible for their patients and families. This special story illustrates the unique value of our Sutter Health family and the great things we accomplish by working together.
